Dartmouth doesn’t close up for winter. The ferries keep crossing, the shops on the Butterwalk stay open, and the coast path out to the castle is as good in December as it is any other time of year (weather depending!). From late November the town turns its attention to Christmas, with a weekend of markets and lantern processions, the most festive steam train running along the far bank, and plenty of small independent shops for working through a gift list.
If you’re planning a winter break in Dartmouth, here are a few ways to enjoy this riverside town, from peaceful walks and historic sights to cosy evenings by the fire, all of it just a short walk or drive from Dart Marina.
Christmas in Dartmouth
It wouldn’t be winter without Christmas and all of the towns festive events to look forward to.
Candlelit Dartmouth
The town’s Christmas weekend, usually held towards the end of November. Christmas markets fill Royal Avenue Gardens and the Old Market, there’s live music through the day, and Father Christmas arrives in town. On the evening, hundreds of handmade lanterns, many made by local schoolchildren, are paraded from the Old Market through the old streets to Royal Avenue Gardens. In recent years there’s also been a Best Dressed Christmas Dog competition, if you’re bringing yours.
The Christmas Train of Lights
The Dartmouth Steam Railway’s Christmas service runs on selected evenings from late November through December. It goes from Paignton to Kingswear, with displays along the line that you can only see from the train. It’s fully ticketed and sells well, so book before you travel. The line runs along the Kingswear bank, directly across the river from the hotel and can be witness right from our restaurant.
RNLI Crab Pot Lights
In early December the Dart RNLI crew and volunteers decorate a stack of crab pots in Coronation Park and switch them on for the season. It’s a small community evening, usually with a shanty band, and a good excuse to drop something in the lifeboat collection tin.
Carols on the Cove
On Christmas Eve, Bayard’s Cove hosts a carol singalong on the old cobbled quay.
Christmas Shopping in Dartmouth
Most of Dartmouth’s shops are small and independent making them an excellent choice for a unique, personal gift that supports local businesses. During the Candlelit weekend many shops stay open later, and the market stalls are good for Devon-made gifts and food.

Pop into the Dartmouth Museum, sheltered in No. 6 The Butterwalk (a former merchant’s house), with its nautical artefacts, ship models and local history displays.
Visit Bayard’s Cove Fort, the little fort guarding the harbour entrance, especially atmospheric in the soft winter light.
Cross to Kingswear (across the river) and enjoy views back toward Dartmouth, mist rising from the water, and the twin castles guarding the estuary.

Greenway House, Agatha Christie’s Devon home, is another perennial draw. Its gardens (along with its riverside paths) invite peaceful winter strolls, with decorations throughout the house and a wreath trail through the grounds.

Dartmouth’s history is inseparable from its harbour, forts and naval traditions, and these stories are especially poignant in the quiet of winter.
